I had so many clients come to me this summer with breakouts, clogged pores, and other skin frustrations wanting me to help them figure out where they could be going wrong. Now, I am not an Esthetician, but I can tell you that 90% of those clients were married to powder, particularly "mineral" powder, and to me, the powder was creating way more of a problem for them than the hot, humid areas they lived in. So today, I am going to bust a few makeup myths and offer you some simple solutions to keeping oil at bay without looking too matte, clogging your pores, and preventing future breakouts.
First things first....get rid of your "mineral" powder. Won't go into all the reasons why but the main reason is that highly marketed, "mineral powder" formulas are saturated with pore clogging ingredients and over time, these magic, "skin conditioning" formulas wreak havoc on pores. I haven't met a user yet whose skin sans makeup is skin that I would like to have, so if you take nothing else from this blog today, trash your "mineral" powder!
Post trash can visit, go straight to a drugstore and buy these 2 products- Skin Brightening Daily Scrub and Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer, both by Aveeno. Once you have these, start every morning applying the scrub all over a dry face and let sit for 30-40 seconds. After you rinse/shower, etc., rub in moisturizer. Don't know why this combination works, but I have seen some miracles happen with this morning routine on plenty of faces in a very short amounts of time, so trust me on this one and get started!
Next, if you live in a hot, humid area, have oil control issues, and/or for one reason or another tend to have makeup on when you exercise, then you may want to consider investing in a waterproof Foundation Stick and a pack of Professional Makeup Sponges. I, personally, switch to Foundation Sticks during the summer months or when I am traveling a good bit. Not only are they really simple to use but they have SPF 15 in them, are waterproof, and the finish is dewy, not oily, which I believe is the prettiest finish. Now, if the stick is not for you, you can always try either a Whipped Cream Foundation (no powder needed) or an Oil-Free Liquid Foundation and only add a little powder with Brush #1 (not a sponge applicator) later in the day if absolutely necessary. Either of these options are fine. *At the end of the day, it boils down to what you prefer. Whether it is a Foundation Stick, a Whipped Cream, or an Oil-Free Liquid, you will be well on your way to clearer, cleaner, prettier skin if you get rid of that "mineral" powder!
